World Designs Network - Species and Styles

Species of Wood

  • Birch: good for plywood, speaker cabinets and making drums
  • Maple: excellent choice of wood for furniture, butcher's blocks and musical instruments
  • Oak: furniture and cabinets, hardwood structural beams and flooring
  • Pine: structural framing for trusses, beams and flooring
  • Cherry: beautiful grain and color for furniture and cabinetry
  • Also: Beech, hickory, hemlock

Styles of Cut

  • Japanese cut: Log is milled without removing slabs or turning, resulting in minimal loss of wood. Planks are stickered and bundled exactly as they are cut so grain can be matched for furniture making.
  • Quarter-sawn-grain: Log is cut into quarters, then sliced into boads at right angles to the growth rings. This yields dimensionally stable lumber with maximum beauty.
